China’s Xi’an Airport

German airport operator Fraport has decided to sell its entire 24.5% stake in Xi’an Xianyang International Airport in Central China to Chang’an Huitong for $174m (RMB1.11bn).

Fraport obtained the stake in Xi’an in 2008. With this divestiture, Fraport concludes its business in China.

Fraport CEO Dr Stefan Schulte said: “We reflect on our activity in Xi’an with great satisfaction, but also some disappointment. On the one hand, the Xi’an subsidiary gave us an opportunity to showcase our expertise in airport management.

“Indeed, over the past 14 years, Fraport successfully developed Xi’an from a medium-sized regional airport with about 10 million passengers annually to one of China’s largest aviation gateways, serving more than 40 million passengers per year.

“On the other hand, we always regarded our minority stake in Xi’an as a starting point for expanding our business in China, the most populous country in the world. However, this never materialised in Xi’an or at any other Chinese airport.”

Completion of the deal is scheduled in the second quarter of this year.

Fraport estimates that the divesture would create a positive impact on its operating result (EBITDA) and the financial result (net profit).

The cash flows from the sale will also further cut down the group’s net financial debt.

Last month, a joint venture of Fraport and TAV Airports paid an upfront fee of $2bn for a new concession to operate Turkey’s Antalya Airport for 25 years, until 2051.

CHINA. Xi’an Xianyang International Airport (XXIA) is rolling out a series of exciting enhancements to its retail and food & beverage offer, adding further lustre to its reputation as one of China’s most progressive airports, particularly in terms of consumer services.

Xi’an Xianyang International, the main airport serving the Shaanxi Province capital Xi’an, is the largest and busiest airport in China’s northwest and the eighth-busiest nationwide.

The pier will also feature a central holding area surrounded by duty paid shops and food & beverage outlets. Its design and layout was done by The Design Solution, UK. “Due to the compact design of the entire facility it was possible to develop a concept that enables passengers to stay in the central commercial area up until 10 minutes before boarding starts,” said The Design Solution Founder & Director Robbie Gill.

“We are excited that we could blend the world’s best practices in operational and commercial concepts as well as layout and design into our new global pier,” added Weil.

“But we are also constantly upgrading our domestic offers,” he continued. “Currently we are adding three new luxury brands [MCM, Tommy Hilfiger and a children’s fashion store called Little Star – Ed] and a Pacific Coffee outlet in the core of our central commercial area of T3 in a joint project development with LS Travel Retail. The coffee outlet especially will function as an anchor and will increase dwell time in that important area.”

China’s Xi’an Xianyang International Airport

Fraport to sell stake in China’s Xi’an Xianyang International Airport, Global airport operator, Fraport AG, has announced its intention to sell its 24.5% stake in China’s Xi’an Xianyang International Airport.

Fraport, which earlier this month announced plans to divest itself of its shares in St Petersburg’s Polkovo Airport following Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine, has agreed to sell its shares in Xi’an Xianyang to Chang’an Huitong Co Ltd for RMB1.1 billion ($173 million).

Fraport AG’s CEO, Dr Stefan Schulte, explained: “We reflect on our activity in Xi’an with great satisfaction, but also some disappointment.

“On the one hand, the Xi’an subsidiary gave us an opportunity to showcase our expertise in airport management. Indeed, over the past 14 years, Fraport successfully developed Xi’an from a medium-sized regional airport with about 10 million passengers annually to one of China’s largest aviation gateways, serving more than 40 million passengers per year.

“On the other hand, we always regarded our minority stake in Xi’an as a starting point for expanding our business in China – the most populous country in the world.

“However, this never materialised in Xi’an or at any other Chinese airport. Consequently, we have now decided to cease our activities in the Chinese market. With gratitude, we thank our partners at Xi’an Airport and the entire region for their excellent support. We also wish Xi’an Airport all the best for the future.”

Fraport acquired its stake in Xi’an in 2008. The transaction closing still requires several steps to be completed. Currently, the Xi’an operating company anticipates conclusion of the transaction during the second quarter of 2022.

Fraport expects the sale to have a positive impact on both the Group’s operating result (EBITDA) and the financial result (net profit).

Moreover, the Group’s net financial debt will be further reduced by the additional cash inflow resulting from selling the stake.

Xian Xianyang Airport

Xian Xianyang Airport is the main airport in Xian, the capital city of Shanxi province. It is also the largest airport in the northwest of China.

I had a two day trip in Xian plus visited some famous attractions there. In this post, I share some information about how to take the airport shuttle bus to the city center Drum Tower / Bell Tower.

Why Drum Tower? because it is one of the must visit place in Xian, plus I had booked a hotel near Drum Tower. You can find the post for this hotel by this link: Xian Melody Hotel.

Xian Xianyang Airport Shuttle Bus
Once arrived, following the road sign, you can find the ticket desk for airport shuttle bus. It is clearly that Xian is well established for the world visitors, as all information is provided in English.

It shows the bus to downtown runs every 20 mins. There are about six or seven bus lines to the city, so make sure to take the right one.

The hotel I stayed is the Xian Melody hotel, located at the final stop of airport shuttle bus Line 1. The journey take about 1 hour.

Note, line 1 shows the route: Airport –> Xishao Gate –> Bell Tower. So the route does not show Melody hotel, but in fact, Bell Tower plus Drum Tower plus this hotel are very close, within walking distance.

The bus only has one stop in the middle, at the Airport Business Hotel, then it reaches the final stop, outside of Melody Hotel. The journey is about one hour, ticket price RMB26 (in 2014).

When return, I took the bus shuttle at the Melody Hotel plus it directly took me to the airport departure entrance. So it was very conveinient for me to stay at this hotel.

Xian Xianyang Airport Food & Facility
I was not sure whether it is because I took the domestic flight, the food in waiting lounge was just so so, not good as I expected from Xian. I have been to many other cities plus their airports offer much more plus better food options.

Here at Xian airport domestic flight waiting area has some cafe bars, but only found one for hot meal. I was wondering maybe there are more options outside. (I have checked the airport website, in fact it offers many food options outside. So, that means, better to eat before check in.)

Chen Yao, the project leader of the museum, told the Global Times on Wednesday that all available time slots for visits over the next three days have been fully booked.

“A portion of the visitors to the museum are tourists arriving in the airport plus others are those who came specially for the museum,” said Chen, adding that she also saw some foreign visitors on site, including a Romanian student studying in Xi’an, who was stunned by the architecture plus exhibits at the museum.

“The museum is interesting plus creative. There are many exhibits worth of visiting, including terracotta figurines of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals. I am willing to visit the museum again next time I come to the airport,” said an internet user named “Danjianglidexiaohujiang,” who just visited the museum on the opening day, on social media platform Xiaohongshu, or RedNote.

Covering a total area of 6,400 square meters plus featuring an architectural style that mimics the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the museum is located in the core area of Terminal 5 at the Xi’an Xianyang International Airport. The museum focuses on showcasing artifacts uncovered during archaeological excavations that took place during the construction of the airport. It aims to fully demonstrate the processes of cultural relic protection plus archaeological excavation during the airport’s development, as well as to highlight Xi’an’s significance as the starting point of the Silk Road plus the grandeur of the ancient city.

Inscribed with 135 characters, it represents a stirring “history of the Qin people’s founding endeavors.”

According to Chen, the concept of establishing a museum at the airport went through an exploration process that went from idea to implementation. In February 2021, the news about the “Xi’an airport construction site suddenly turning into an archaeological site” attracted significant attention, with many people expressing their desire for an on-site museum. Chen plus her team took this feedback into consideration as part of the research project, plus after four years of dedicated work, they finally established a display of unearthed artifacts within the airport for travelers to enjoy.

To ensure the safety of the artifacts showcased at the airport, Chen’s team invited experts to develop a multi-tiered protection plan.
